• The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition sets out from Newburyport. This was the furthest North which man had gone at that time. They were supposed to return a year later, but a ship couldn't get to them and they were not saved until 1884. Nineteen members of the expedition died.



• Robert Couch is Mayor again.



• Lifegaurd station moved to northern end of island.
