1776
- Newburyport gave Boston £202;, 10 shillings, and 2 pence.
- On January 15, the brig Sulkey headed to Boston with British provisions from Ireland
was captured by a privateer ship, Washington, and brought into Newburyport.
- Also on January 15, a ship flying a British flag looked to be lost off of Plum Island. A
group of men in whaling ships led by Offin Boardman went out to the ship. The ship was from
London heading to Boston with provisions for the British soldiers. The group told them that
they were from Boston and would help them, they boarded with their arms and took control of the
ship without a fight and brought it into Newburyport.
- On February 16th, The Yankee Hero captured a ship of 300 tons loaded with provisions and
brought it into Newburyport.
- On March 1st, The Yankee Hero brought into Newburyport the brig Nelly headed to Boston with
provisions.
- On May 31, it was voted that if congress wanted the colonies to become independant, Newburyport
would agree.
